Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Southeast Africa, was a French colony until 1960, when it became sovereign. France issued these aluminum coins between 1948 and 1958. Coins of 1 franc were minted in 1948 and 1958, 2 francs were minted only in 1948 and 5 francs were minted only in 1953. All dates of all denominations are worth much less than $1 US dollar when in circulated condition. A collector might pay up to $3 US dollars for an circulated coin.
