Great find, NLH. These are not very common. They were only minted in 1891. They are made of bronze, and specimens that are uncirculated will often exhibit beautiful mint luster. According to the catalogs, four hundred thousand of these coins were made. It is not known how many have survived until now, and it is safe to say that only a small fraction of the original 400,000 coins remain in fully uncirculated condition.
Taking this into account, we can understand how the catalog values rise very quickly as the condition moves towards uncirculated.
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $5
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $50
If you have a fully uncirculated coin with no problems like spots, stains or corrosion, and a strong mint luster or beautiful toning, you can safely double the value to $100.
Of course, these are catalog values.
The term 'catalog value' is explained on our Terminology page.
