Schaffhausen is a city in northern Switzerland and the capital of the canton of the same name. Back in medieval times the city of Schaffhausen issued large silver thalers with the inscription DEUS SPES NOSTRA EST, that is, GOD IS OUR HOPE. The eagle-like bird on the thalers is a symbol of the Teutonic Order, a German military order which today has become a purely religious Catholic order.
Genuine, original thalers from medieval times are highly sought by collectors. The one in our picture sold for about $330 US dollas back in 2003. It would be worth quite a bit more today. Very approximate catalog values are:
worn: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $450
well preserved: $600
The design has become popular of late. The Teutonic eagle and DEVS SPES NOSTRA inscription is found on different items of recent manufacture, especially buttons. If you have the coin, it is worth a bundle. If you have the button, it is worth a few cents.
