New Zealand makes a lot of coins with a lot of interesting wild life. This cent has kowhai leaves on the back, with the reigning British monarch on the front: Elizabeth II. K?whai are small, woody legume trees in the genus Sophora, native to New Zealand.

Circulated coins from this series are worth small amounts: less than a dollar at most for all dates. A collector may pay as much as $3 US dollars for a coin in uncirculated conditions. They are few exceptions, the years 1971, 1972 and 1973 are somewhat rare.
