Hello Maryanne -- These old nickel coins come from the German Weimar Republic between the World Wars and carry decent numismatic (coin collector) value. There are mostly common dates and mint marks in the series, and you have one of those. Better double-check the mint mark, however. The catalogs say that there were no B mint marked coins in the series, just A, D, E, F, G, and J. Please use the Contact Us form to let us know if your coin does, in fact, have a B mint mark. That would cause a stir in the numismatic community! If you have a coin dated 1938, be sure to check it against the picture on this CoinQuest page [Press Here].
For common date coins that look like our picture, the catalog values run like this:
COMMON DATES (not shown in lists below)
worn: $2 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $8
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $80
Please use our Important Terminology link to understand what is meant by 'catalog value.' It is somewhat a weasel word.
There are several better dates and mint marks. The list below gives catalog value for average circulated coins. As always, value goes up for better condition, down for worse condition, and to zero for coins with major problems like deep scratches, spots, and strong, abrasive cleanings.
