Wow. Neat coin, pmatson. You see the silver stuivers with the bundle of arrows much more often than the gold version. West Friesland is a region in North Holland in the Netherlands. Different dates on this coin carry different mint marks: 1738 and 1739: turnip, 1760: rooster, 1779, 1780: ship. Typical catalog values for all dates run like this:
worn: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $400
well preserved: $600
fully uncirculated: $1200
The 1738 date is a little more common than others, so its prices might be somewhat lower.
The coin in our picture comes from Goldberg Coins and Collectibles where it sold for $525 US dollars during a 2013 auction. The selling price is low because the coin has been cleaned. You can easily note the unnatural appearance of the coin's surfaces, and close inspection reveals tiny striations from steel wool or a similar abrasive. To compensate for cleaning, the Goldberg auction estimated a price of only $200. The fact that the bidding went as high as $525 attests to the rarity and beauty of this coin.
