Just about all countries of the world took precious metal out of their circulating coinage during the early 1960s. Not Portugal (yay!). Their circulating coins continued with silver composition into the 1980s. This example, a 50 escudos from 1968, contains 0.376 troy ounces of silver, worth about $6 US dollars at today's silver price of $16.27 US dollars per troy ounce. Look up the value of silver and multiply by 0.376 to compute the current silver value of this coin.
This 50 escudos can never be worth less than its silver value. For coins in fully uncirculated condition (like the one in our picture), collectors may pay slightly more:
50 ESCUDOS:
circulated coins: silver value
fully uncirculated coins: silver value + $5
