South Africa (Suid Afrika) minted 1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cent coins with bi-lingual inscriptions and a shield with antelopes design between 1970 and 2000. Coins of different denominations are made of different metals and display different patterns on the reverse side, as follows:
1/2 CENT, 1970 to 1983: bronze, sparrows
1 CENT, 1970 to 1989: bronze, sparrows
1 CENT, 1990 to 2000: copper plated steel, sparrows
2 CENTS, 1970 to 1990: bronze, wildebeast
2 CENTS, 1990 to 2000: copper-plated steel, eagle with fish
5 CENTS, 1970 to 1989: nickel, crane
5 CENTS, 1990 to 2000: copper-plated steel, crane
10 CENTS, 1970 to 1989: nickel, aloe plant
10 CENTS, 1990 to 2000: brass-plated steel, arum lily
20 CENTS, 1970 to 1990: nickel, protea flower
20 CENTS, 1990 to 2000: brass-plated steel, protea flower
50 CENTS, 1970 to 1990: nickel, assorted flowers
50 CENTS, 1990 to 2000: brass-plated steel, bird of paradise flower
All these are modern issues made of non-precious metal, so the values of all coins are low. Values run as follows:
1/2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 CENTS:
worn: less than $1 US dollar
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: less than $1
fully uncirculated: $2
The catalogs show four exceptions to the values above.
- 1/2 cents dated after 1970 catalog at $4 in fully uncirculated condition
- 20 cents dated 1970 catalog at $15 in fully uncirculated condition
- 20 cents dated 1990 and 1991 catalog at $6 in fully uncirculated condition
- 50 cents dated 1990 and 1991 catalog at $8 in fully uncirculated condition
