Charles II (CAR II) ruled in Naples between 1665 and 1700. These coins bear his likeness and the inscription CAR II D G REX HISP ET NEAP. They are old and quite valuable, unless severely damaged.
There are four denominations which all carry the same pattern, but in different sizes and minor variations:
CARLINO: 21 mm diameter, G X beneath the fleece
TARI: 25 mm diameter, G XX beneath the fleece
1/2 DUCATO: 322 mm diameter, G 50 beneath the fleece
DUCATO: 39 mm diameter, G 100 beneath the fleece
The coin in our picture is a half ducato which sold for 500 euros (about $680 US dollars) during a 2011 auction by Numismatica Ranieri in Bologna. CoinQuest thanks Numismatica Ranieri for use of their coin photo. It is a nice one!
