Great Britain Sovereign, Half Sovereign, and 2 and 5 Pounds 1937

Great Britain Sovereign, Half Sovereign, and 2 and 5 Pounds 1937

These are amazing coin. As always, we are grateful for Chard's permission to use their coin photos. Isn't it a beautiful coin? Please click to the TaxFreeGold [Press Here] page about these coins, which gives good background information and technical specifications.

There are four gold coins which look like the picture:

1937 HALF SOVEREIGN: 18 mm diameter, 0.1177 troy ounces gold
1937 SOVEREIGN: 23 mm diameter, 0.2355 troy ounces gold
1937 TWO POUNDS: 28 mm diameter, 0.4710 troy ounces gold
1937 FIVE POUNDS: 36 mm diameter, 1.177 troy ounces gold

The value of these coins varies strongly with condition. Suppose, for instance, one of these coins had a big, bold fingerprint on the king's portrait or on the Dragon Slayer. The fingerprint would lower value substantially. On the other hand, suppose another coin dazzled the viewer's eyes with splendid detail and artistic beauty. This coin would be worth much more than an impaired coin. Numismatists (coin collectors) have a formal method for describing coins like this. It is called the Grading Scale, and it is beyond the scope of CoinQuest to delve too deeply into it. Suffice it to say:

PR50 5 pounds sell for about $1500 US dollars
PR67 5 pounds sell for about $15000

The annotations 'PR50' and 'PR67' are numismatic grades from the Grading Scale. There are companies where professional graders assign numismatic grades to coins like this. You send your coin to them, pay a fee, and they assign a grade and encapsulate your coin in a special holder which ensures that the grade will not change. The fee is usually around $100. Companies that do this are called PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and ICG. Look them up on the Internet. Do not use other companies.

NEVER CLEAN A COIN. CLEANING RUINS VALUE.

In summary, these coin carry values as follows:

HALF SOVEREIGN:
PR50: $350 US dollars approximate retail value
PR67: $800

SOVEREIGN
PR50: $700 US dollars approximate retail value
PR67: $3000

TWO POUNDS
PR50: $1000 US dollars approximate retail value
PR67: $8000

FIVE POUNDS
PR50: $1500 US dollars approximate retail value
PR67: $15000
