This coin was minted by the German city of Dortmund in Westphalia, about 50 miles east of Düsseldorf. Dortmund was the site of an imperial mint from the 10th to early 16th century and later it had its own city coinage, dating pieces from 1553 to 1760. In 1803 Dortmund was annexed to Nassau-Dillenburg and then passed to Prussia in 1815.
