Honan Province is located in east-central China. This series of copper cash coins from Honan is complicated, as explained on this page. Before starting the explanation, three points apply to all coins:
1. Most Honan coins you see today are pretty well beat up. They have heavy wear, scratches, and stains. If you have a coin in decent condition, it is valuable due to its condition. For reference, the 200 cash in our main picture (upper left) is a $250 US dollar coin, as is the 50 cash coin in our secondary picture (lower right).
2. In general, coin catalogs lag true market value for these coins because the market is so volatile for genuine Chinese coins. In preparing this page, CoinQuest considers actual auction prices, rather than catalog prices, in our estimates of value. Values are very approximate. Each coin stands on its own merits. Values shown here can easily be off by 100 percent.
3. All Chinese coins are subject to counterfeiting. We do not know of any for-sure counterfeits of Honan cash coins, but there are probably some out there.
During the early 1900s Honan Province issued copper coins with several different patterns and inscriptions. This page applies only to coins with two crossed flags on the front, the HO-NAN inscription at the top of the flags, the CASH inscription at the bottom of the flags. Other coins, notably coins missing HO-NAN or with a CHINA inscription rather than a HO-NAN inscription, are not covered on this page. Also, coins of Hunan Province (HU-NAN) are not covered.
The flags bear different patterns. In particular, a flag may have one star or several stripes. In the listings below, be sure to compare you coin carefully to the flag descriptions given.
