There were relatively few standard coins in circulation during the American Civil War. People hoarded them due to mass uncertainty about the future of the nation. Private people issued privately made tokens, and this OUR CARD token is one which was used like a retailer's coupon today.
Civil War Tokens, or CWTs, are avidly collected by a subset of collectors, and there is great demand for nice-looking specimens. The one in our picture would probably sell for $30 to $40 US dollars retail. Catalog values run like this:
OUR CARD TOKEN
worn: $15 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $50
well preserved: $85
fully uncirculated: $250
We have a general page on CWTs with more examples and several links to CWT web sites. Please visit our CWT page [PRESS HERE] for more information.
