In 1765 Mughal Emperor Shah Alam gave the British East India Company gifts in Bengal, Orissa, and Bihar. This made the company basically responsible to the Emperor. The period known as the Bengal Presidency lasted until 1835. These are coins of the Bengal Presidency in India with dates between 1782 and 1784:
1/16 ANNA: about 14 mm diameter
1/8 ANNA: 18 mm
1/4 ANNA: 21 mm
1/2 ANNA: 25 mm
Even recent coin catalogs do not reflect the marked interest in coins of old India. The Internet and other modern marvels of communication have enabled collectors worldwide to view and study these intriguing coins. Our values below reflect results from auction sales, not solely catalog listings. The coin in our photo is an 1/8 anna which sold for $55 US dollars during a 2013 auction. CoinQuest thanks Stephen Album Rare Coins for use of their coin photo.
