In 1997, Spain issued a 5 ptas coin to commemorate the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands are a province of Spain and are located in the Mediterranean Sea. 'Ptas' is short for pesetas, which was the Spanish unit of currency until 2002 (in 2002 they switched over to the Euro). 100 centimos (cents) was equal to 1 peseta.
The obverse of the coin shows a stone monument, while the reverse shows a man on a horse and the denomination with the inscription 'Islas Baleares.' This coin has a diameter of 17.5mm and weighs three grams, and is made of aluminum-bronze.
Over 700 million of these commemorative 5 ptas coins were minted, and along with the fact that they were made of base metal, there really isn't much collector value to the coin. Here are the approximate catalog values for this coin:
Worn: less than $1 (U.S. dollar)
Average circulated: less than $1
Well preserved: less than $1
Fully uncirculated: $1
Please note that all values on this page are approximate catalog values. Be sure you understand how catalog values work. They are inflated values that are normally higher than actual buy and sell values. Refer to our Terminology page for a complete description of catalog values.
