It was not until 1990 that Lithuania gained full independence. Before then it was under the control of Russian and the Soviet Union and, for a time, Poland. The Republic of Lithuania was formed shortly after World War I, and, even though occupied by Soviet troops, issued coinage in CENTAS and LITU denominations. The rider with shield and sword was the emblem of the republic.
There are other 10 litu coins with the rider, but with a different male portrait. This page applies only to coins which look like our image in the upper left.
