After World War I, government issued money was in short supply in Germany. Many towns, cities, regions, and individual merchants began to issue their own money to support commerce. Thus notgeld, emergency money, was born.
This is a piece of notgeld from the region of Wachenbuchen, near Frankfort, in Germany, probably from a merchant there Wilhelm Gerlach. This piece is somewhat hard to find, so collectors might pay a tad more than 'normal' notgeld which is still quite plentiful today.
