Portugal (Macau, Macao) 5, 10, 50 Avos, and 1 and 5 Pacatas 1952 to 1978

Portugal (Macau, Macao) 5, 10, 50 Avos, and 1 and 5 Pacatas 1952 to 1978

This is an interesting series of coins which could make a challenging collecting project. There are several denominations, dates, and compositions, all with the same basic MACAU pattern, but with some differences on the REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA side.

Macao (or Macau) was a colony of Portugal near Hong Kong which reverted to Chinese control in 1999. When these coins were minted, it was Portuguese.

5 AVOS: bronze 1952
5 AVOS: nickel-brass 1967
10 AVOS: bronze 1952
10 AVOS: nickel-brass 1967 to 1976
50 AVOS: copper-nickel 1952 to 1978
1 PATACA: silver (0.069 troy ounces) 1952
1 PATACA: nickel 1968 to 1975
5 PATACAS: silver (0.347 troy ounces) 1952
5 PATACAS: silver (0.209 troy ounces) 1971

For silver coins, compute the basic value (BV) first. BV is the value of the silver content, found by multiplying the current price of silver by the weight in troy ounces. For instance, if silver is trading at $15 US dollars per troy ounce (be sure to look it up, it changes every day), the BV for a 1952 5 patacas would be 0.347 x 15 = $5.20 US dollars.
