Genuine $2.50 and $5.00 gold pieces are always worth lots of money. This variety, with the bust of Miss Liberty wearing a folded cap, is especially valuable because of age and rarity.

$2.50 GOLD, quarter eagle, 18 mm diameter, 0.1288 troy ounces gold
$5.00 GOLD, half eagle, 24 mm diameter, 0.2579 troy ounces gold

If you have one of these coins, you should get to the library and look up your coin in a coin catalog. There are several twists and varieties of these coins that affect value. Here we give only approximate, general values. You should also consider having your coin authenticated, graded, and encapsulated by PCGS, ICG, NGC, or ANACS (look them up on the Internet; do not use other services).

Look at the beautiful 1822 half eagle (5 D) in our secondary image to the right. It is in amazing condition. Wow. Trouble is, it is a fake. Do you see the word COPY imprinted on the eagle side? This makes it a legal reproduction, one of many gorgeous coins found today on web sites such as Ken Potter's page [PRESS HERE]. The piece is actually made of silver that has been plated with gold. Retail price for items like this is $50 or so.

You must always deal with people you know and trust when buying or selling expensive rare coins. It usually takes an investment of several years of good experiences to build up such trust, but it is well worth the effort if you want to become a serious numismatist.
