Italy (Lucca) 5 Soldi 1833

Italy (Lucca) 5 Soldi 1833

These are nice silver coins from the old Italian State of Lucca. The silver purity is only 20 percent, so there is not a ton of silver in each coin (only 0.019 troy ounces), but the rarity comes into play when estimating value.

The coin in our picture is exceptional. You hardly ever see them as nice as this one. It comes from Kuenker in Germany, where it sold for $475 US dollars during at 2014 auction.

More normal coins with normal wear garner lower catalog values, but none are too shabby:

worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $45
well preserved: $150
fully uncirculated: $400

To understand what 'catalog value' means, please read our Terminology page.
