PRO BONO PUBLICO means FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD which, I guess, applies to Lady Godiva when she rides her horse wearing no clothes. But the castle-clad elephant on the back is more difficult to explain, except that it appears on the official crest of Coventry, UK.
Warwickshire is a landlocked non-metropolitan county in the West Midlands of England. The historic county boundaries included Coventry and Solihull, as well as much of Birmingham.
This is a Conder token, so named for James Conder who was an early collector and cataloged interesting coins privately minted in response to British coin shortages in rural areas. Usually pennies and half pennies, Conder tokens were minted by towns, businesses, and organizations of all types to meet a need for low denomination coinage that was not being provided by government. Thousands of varieties of tokens were minted, many are beautiful and intricate works of art.
Typical values for this Conder token are:
worn: $25 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $60
well preserved: $100
fully uncirculated: $200
The token in our picture comes from Emporium Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany where it sold for 100 euros (about $110 US dollars) during a 2013 auction. CoinQuest thanks Emporium Hamburg for use of their coin photo. It is a beauty.
