Sharp-eyed numismatists like Bethanie notice that sometimes the inscription ONE FILS changes to ONE FIL. This happens only on coins dated 1949AD. 'Fil' appears on 1949 coins, 'fils' appears on all other dates. Composition changes with denomination:
1, 5, 10 fils: bronze
20, 50, 100 fils: copper-nickel
Both the date and denomination appear in Latin as well as Eastern Arabic numerals. Further, the date is given both in Muslim (AH) and Western (AD) calendars. The Muslim calendar is about 600 years behind the Western calendar, so, for instance, 1949AD is AH1363.
The values of these coins depends on the denomination and date. Most coins are 'common date' and the following values apply to all denominations:
1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 FILS (COMMON DATE):
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $1
fully uncirculated: $2
But there are some special dates. The values shown in the list of special dated below are for coins in fully uncirculated condition. Circulated coins are worth much less.
SPECIAL DATES:
1 FIL 1949AD: $12 approximate catalog value fully uncirculated

1 FILS 1965AD: $8
5 FILS 1960AD: $8

100 FILS 1949AD: $12

All these values are catalog values. See our Important Terminology page to understand how catalog values work.
