Brtiannia looks a little more spiffy today, but she graces most of England's early copper coinage, including the large cartwheel pennys and two pence coins.
Thanks to Tony Clayton for use of his coin photo.
It is time to get your meansuring stick, Ruthie. If your cartwheel measures 36 mm, it is a penny. If it measures 42 mm it is 2 pence. The two pence is more valuable.
These coins are dated only 1797 and are a favorite with collectors. Here are the catalog values in US dollars (use our Important Terminology link to understand what this means):
PENNY:
worn $10 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated $40
well preserved $150
fully uncirculatd $800
TWO PENCE:
worn $25 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated $120
well preserved $380
fully uncirculated $1100
The coin in Tony Clayton's picture is well preserved.
