Brazil 320 and 640 Reis (Maria I) 1778 to 1805

Brazil minted these large silver coins between 1778 and 1805. They are valuable coins. The one in our picture comes from Sincona in Zurich, Switzerland where it sold for 180 Swiss francs (about the same number of US dollars) during a 2014 auction. It would probably have sold for more if there were no scratches on the back.

Recent catalogs appear to be somewhat behind the times. Comparing them to actual auction results, these coins are more valuable than (at least some) catalogs indicate. We have adjusted our values below to reflect recent auction results.

For 320 reis coins, specific date matters little. However, for 640 reis coins, there are some 'good dates' which carry values higher than those above.
