Amazing coin. These are old gold trade coins from Austria with inscription FRANCISCVS I D G. There are ducats and 4 ducats:
DUCAT: 19 mm diameter, 0.1107 troy ounces gold
4 DUCAT: 38 mm diameter, 0.4438 troy ounces gold
To find value, first find base value, or BV, which is the value due solely to the gold content. Look up the price of gold at kitco.com. The price of gold changes every day. If, for instance, the price of gold is $1150 US dollars per troy ounce, the BV for a ducat is 0.1107 x 1150 = $127 US dollars, and the BV for a 4 ducat is 0.4438 x 1150 = $510.
Most coins are worth more than BV. This is because collectors will pay premiums for nice-looking coins to add to their collections. Here are the stats:
DUCAT
worn: BV
average circulated: BV + $20
well preserved: BV + $50
fully uncirculated: BV + $180
4 DUCAT
worn: BV + $100
average circulated: BV + $400
well preserved: BV + $1000
fully uncirculated: BV + $2000
The values above apply to all dates and mint marks, but there are a few exceptions which are worth more:
1819V DUCAT: BV + $500 well preserved
1824V DUCAT: BV + $500 well preserved
1831A DUCAT: BV + $2000 well preserved
1818A 4 DUCAT: BV + $1500 well preserved
