Morocco has minted many nice-looking coins over the years. Modern ones have many patterns, but one prevalent pattern is addressed on this page:
- the front has a portrait of ruler Mohammed VI
- the back has the national coat of arms with crown, star and lions on each side
Coins with this pattern come in various denominations and dates. The dates are given in both Western (Gregorian) and Islamic (Hirji) calendars. Denominations are:
20 SANTIMAT 1974 (brass)
50 SANTIMAT 1974 (copper-nickel)
1/2 DIRHAM 1987 (copper-nickel)
1, 2, 5, 50, 150, 200, and 250 DIRHAM
Most of these coins are made of non-precious metal and values are low, as follows:
NON-PRECIOUS METAL COINS:
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $4
Coins that are made of precious metal are called out individually below. If you have one of these, the value is equal to base value (BV) plus a few dollars premium. Base value is computed by multiplying the current price of the precious metal by the metallic content. Get the current price of precious metal at kitco.com, and the metallic content from the list below.
PRECIOUS METAL COINS:
50 DIRHAM 1975: 1.04 troy ounces silver
150 DIRHAM 1981: 1.04 troy ounces silver
200 DIRHAM 1990: 0.446 troy ounces silver
250 DIRHAM 1975 to 1978: 0.1866 troy ounces gold
250 DIRHAM 2001 to 2007: 0.743 troy ounces silver
If your coin is not in this list (immediately above), it is made of non-precious metal (values are shown further above).
