Colombia 10 and 20 Centavos 1945 to 1952

This page applies to silver Colombian 10 and 20 centavos coins that look like our picture. That is Francisco de Paula Santander on the front. He was a military and political leader during the 1810 to 1819 independence war of the United Provinces of New Granada (present-day Colombia). Santander became known as 'The Man of the Laws.'

These small amounts of silver give these coins a small base value, or BV, which is the value due to silver content alone. At, say, $15 US dollars per troy ounce silver price (look up today's price at kitco.com), BV for 10 centavos is 0.040 x 15 = 60 US cents and for 20 centavos BV = $1.20.

The numismatic (coin collector) value of these coins normally supersedes the base value unless the coin is heavily worn or damaged.
