With a frozen date of 1865, these medals were 'struck during the 19th century in very small numbers each year, perhaps in groups of 3 or 4 or even one at a time. The US mint employees striking the medals obviously experimented to create various unusual finishes on these medals. I read one formula that included using sulphur, sawdust and other chemicals in a tumbler to create a specific bronze finish.'

'The medal has an extremely thick edge [... and] was struck using an extremely thick planchet/flan. The thickness of the medal measures 8.4 mm, in part due to the high rims. Still this is much thicker than 20th century strikes of the large US Mint medals which are generally 4.5-5.5 mm.'

The quoted text comes from eBay seller Jennichar and describes a 'largest size' medal with a diameter of 3 inches, or 76 mm. The medal sold for $150 US dollars in december 2015.

Another smaller, but still large type of these medals measures 63 mm in diameter. They are also original 19th century strikes and similarly valuable.

Requester Heather's version is a much smaller, modern token strike by the commercial Franklin Mint. It doesn't have the massive, imposing look of the originals, and the details are much less impressive, having been smushed together to fit on the small flan.
