Germany (Hannover) Groschen and Thaler Silver Coinage with Horse 1814 to 1866

Germany (Hannover) Groschen and Thaler Silver Coinage with Horse 1814 to 1866

Clearly, the spiffy jumping horse is a symbol of the old German State of Hannover. The horse appears on many Hannover coins, but this page addresses only those made of silver with the inscription HANNOVER or HANNOV somewhere on the coin. There are many denominations that meet this criterion:

1/2 GROSCHEN: 1858 to 1865
1 GROSCHEN: 1858 to 1866
24 EINEN THALER: 1814 to 1856
3 MARIEN GROSCHEN: 1816 to 1821
6 EINEN THALER: 1821
16 GUTE GROSCHEN: 1820 to 1834

The denomination is spelled out on the side without the horse.

We give approximate catalog values for these denominations below. To reach these values, coins must be in good condition with decent eye appeal and no damage such as scracthes, spots, cleanings, nicks, gouges, and the like.

If you have a 16 gute groschen, it is wise to take it to a professional coin dealer or knowledgeable collector for an in-person inspection. There are many different varieties of these coins and some of the varieties are worth two or three times the values shown above. There are too many varieties for us to cover on the simple CoinQuest forum.
