Sweden 1/6, 1/4 and 1/2 Skilling 1832 and 1833

Sweden 1/6, 1/4 and 1/2 Skilling 1832 and 1833

Carl (or Charles) XIV wasn't really the fourteenth king Carl of Sweden, as his Roman numerals might lead one to think. The fictitious enumeration was started by one of his predecessors, Carl IX, who was actually the fourth Carl, making the person on these coins the ninth actual Carl to rule over Sweden. Confusing!

But enough about names. This was a short-lived series of small-denomination coins. They were struck in copper, and heavily circulated. There's a good amount of worn coins to go around for collectors, but better preserved specimens are much harder to find. This shows in the catalog values listed below:

1/6 SKILLING WITH PLAIN BORDER, DRAPED BUST
worn: $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6
well preserved: $16
fully uncirculated: $25

1/6 SKILLING WITH BEADED BORDER, PLAIN BUST
worn: $5
average circulated: $22
well preserved: $60
fully uncirculated: $90

1/6 SKILLING WITH BEADED BORDER, DRAPED BUST
worn: $7
average circulated: $25
well preserved: $85
fully uncirculated: $120

Note that there are three different types of 1/6 skilling coins. Most have a plain border, but some have a pearl-beaded border. coins with the beaded border are more valuable. Some coins with the beaded border show the king in drapery - some show a plain bust. The draped version is slightly less common.

1/4 SKILLING
worn: $6
average circulated: $30
well preserved: $75
fully uncirculated: $115
1/4 skilling coins dated 1832 are less common, multiply the above values by 2.5

1/2 SKILLING
worn: $6
average circulated: $25
well preserved: $80
fully uncirculated: $150
only three 1/2 skilling coins were struck in 1833 - they are so rare that the catalogs do not list a value

Coins that are bent, heavily scratched, corroded, or have other serious problems will be worth much less than the catalog values cited above. See the Important Terminology page at the top left to learn more about the term 'catalog value' and how to convert into actual buy- and sell values.
