Nice coin, BG. It is from the old German State of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. You have a 2 thaler coin, also called a double thaler or 3 1/2 gulden. They are valuable coins.
Wilhelm also appears on a 1 thaler coin that looks very similar, although the shield on the back is more a rectangle than an oval.
1 THALER: 33 mm diameter, 0.537 troy ounces silver
2 THALER: 40 mm diameter, 1.074 troy ounces silver
Typical catalog values run like this:
1 THALER
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $100
well preserved: $200
fully uncirculated: $500
thalers dated 1837, 1838 and 1851 are more rare; double these values
thalers dated after 1857 are more common; halve these values
2 THALER
worn: $100 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $400
fully uncirculated: $800
The coin in the picture (upper left) comes from our requester. It has some tic marks on the front and this detracts from value. My guess is that it would sell for about $150 to a collector eager to add it to his or her collection. A coin dealer would probably pay about one-half that.
