The Maldive Islands are comprised of about 2000 coral islets about 400 miles out to sea from southern India. From the times of the Second Sultanate (1960) the Maldivians produced coinage with a distinctive pattern of palm, flags, start and crescent. Only in 1984 did the coins bear Latin lettering with incriptions MALDIVES and LAARI. This page applies to coins without Latin letters and with the palm-flag-star-crescent pattern.
