Great Britain 5 Pounds Una and the Lion Pattern (Fakes are possible) 1839

Great Britain 5 Pounds Una and the Lion Pattern (Fakes are possible) 1839

This is often heralded as the 'most beautiful British coin,' depicting Queen Victoria as Lady Una, a character from Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene, from 1590. These coins are very rare and very valuable, selling at auction for $50000 to $200000 US dollars.

Of course, with such a valuable and beautiful coin, fakes abound. Many fakes have the word COPY inscribed, but some do not.

FAKES WITH WORD 'COPY'
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $2
well preserved: $3
fully uncirculated: $5

Sometimes replicas are made in pure silver and plated with gold. These are worth their weight in silver. If you are not sure exactly what your coin is made of, take it to a jeweler for an evaluation.
