Germany (Prussia) Thaler 1764 to 1786

Germany (Prussia) Thaler 1764 to 1786

These old thalers were struck under Frederick II 'The Great', king of Prussia from 1740 until his death in 1786. His long reign spanned three wars and saw the construction of magnificent buildings such as the Berlin State Opera and St. Hedwig's Cathedral. The thaler contains 0.537 troy ounces of silver.

Several different mint marks were used, spanning from the letters A through to F.
A = Berlin
B = Breslau (today Wroc?aw, Poland)
C = Dresden
D = Aurich
E = Königsberg (today Kaliningrad, Russia)
F = Magdeburg
(The G mint of Szczecin only struck fractional thalers.)

The values below are for all *common* dates and mint marks:
worn: $45 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $450
fully uncirculated: $1000 and up

There are also some *better dates* in the series. If your coin is NOT in the list below, then it is a common type. The following values are for coins in average circulated condition:

Mint mark B, BEFORE 1780: $265 when average circulated
1764 C and 1765*C*: $400 avg. circulated
1765 D: $1350
1764E: $750
1772E: $500
1764F, '65F, '66F and '67F: $450

Any coin with unattractive damage (holes, severe scratching, polishing) is worth much less than the values cited above. Be sure to read our Important Terminology page for information on how to translate these catalog values into actual buy and sell values.

The coin in the image to the right comes from requester qd. We are sorry to report that it is worth about $8 US dollars, the value of silver in the coin. First, notice that the date is 1780B. It is a common date since it is not in our *better date* list. The wear is substantial, so for an undamaged coin the catalog value would be about $45. However, the coin is heavily damage. The front has severe scratches, and the back has been cleaned with silver polish. This damage erases any collector value for the coin. No serious coin collector would consider adding qd's coin to his or her collection. With zero collector demand, the value is reduced to bullion value alone.
