Medal US Hawaii Maui Trade Dollar 1992 to Date

Since 1992 the Island of Maui in the US State of Hawaii has issued 'trade dollars' for tourists. These nice-looking medals (not really coins) have attracted a collector following and therefore have after-market value. Some of the artwork is very pleasing, especially for people who like Hawaii.

The medals come in copper-nickel (cupronickel) and in silver. The silver versions are proof coins that are made with special frosty finishes for collectors. They contain one troy ounce of silver. Look up the current price of silver (e.g., at kitco.com) to find the Base Value (BV). If, for instance, silver is trading at $15 US dollars per troy ounce, the BV for a Maui silver proof is $15.

Since this is a brand new market (since 1992), prices of individual medals fluctuate substantially. The best way to ascertain the price of a specific Maui Trade dollar is to look on eBay and find a few like yours. When checking eBay prices, consider only medals that have sold. Medals that have not sold can carry virtually any price. Only sold medals can be used to determine value. EBay has an 'advanced search' feature that allows you to look for medals that have been sold.
