Carol's reign in Romania lasted 48 years, from 1866 to 1914. At the 40-year mark he issued these silver and gold coins with his younger and older portraits.
1 LEU: 0.1342 troy ounces silver
5 LEI: 0.7234 troy ounces silver
20 LEI: 0.1867 troy ounces gold
100 LEI: 0.9334 troy ounces gold
The coins are quite valuable, especially in good condition. It is difficult to find any of these coins with little or no wear. The 5 lei in our main picture (to the upper left) is in average circulated condition, and it is a $100 US dollar coin. The 20 lei is in well preserved condition, and it is a $500 coin.
To compute the basic value (or base value, or 'melt value,' or BV), multiply the current price of silver and gold by the troy ounces of each. See kitco.com for current values.
