India (Awadh) Falus, Rupee, and Ashrafi of Wajid Ali Shah 1847 to 1856

The coin catalog reports that the two figures on this coin are mermaids. I might not have guessed that, but most coinage from Wajid Ali Shah in the Indian princely state of Awadh shows the two beauties explicitly. Under the mermaids is a bowl-shaped crescent. Dates on these coins appear in eastern Arabic numerals (see below) and are specified in the Islamic hijri calendar. The coin values below are roughly the same for all dates. Lack of wear and damage, and good eye appeal, are the predominant factors that increase the value of individual coins. There are many variations of the patterns, and several denominations:

1/8 FALUS: copper, about 12 mm diameter
1/4 FALUS: copper, about 14 mm diameter
1/2 FALUS: copper, about 16 mm diameter
FALUS: copper, about 20 mm diameter

1/16 RUPEE: silver, about 10 mm diameter
1/8 RUPEE: silver, about 12 mm diameter
1/4 RUPEE: silver, about 14 mm diameter
1/2 RUPEE: silver, about 18 mm diameter
RUPEE: silver, about 26 mm diameter

1/4 ASHRAFI: gold, about 12 mm diameter
1/2 ASHRAFI: gold, about 16 mm diameter
