Chile One Centavo and Half Centavo 1835 to 1853

Chile One Centavo and Half Centavo 1835 to 1853

These are among the early decimal coinage of Chile. They sport a single bold star on one side, and the wreathed denomination on the other side:

1 CENTAVO: un centavo
1/2 CENTAVO: medio centavo

The inscription ECONOMIA ES RIQUEZA means ECONOMY IS WEALTH.

These coins are sought by collectors and that gives them value. Higher values kick in for coins in well preserved condition. The listings below apply to all dates.

1 CENTAVO
worn: $2 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $15
well preserved: $35
fully uncirculated: $100

1/2 CENTAVO
worn: $1 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $6
well preserved: $20
fully uncirculated: $100

These are inflated catalog values. Actual buy and sell values will be less. See our Important Terminology page for an explanation of how catalog values work.

If you are interested, get a coin catalog and explore a few interesting varieties of this coin. For instance, some coins have different shapes for the letter 'Q' in RIQUEZA. This does not affect value very much, but is interesting nevertheless.
