Bolivia 1/20, 1/10, 1/5 and 1 Boliviano 1864

The ornate seal of Bolivia appears on the front of this coin, complete with flags, a cannon, an axe, a mountain, the sun, a llama, and a condor, all in an oval-based framework. The denomination appears inside a wreath on the other side:

1/10 BOLIVIANO, 1864 to 1867, 18 mm diameter, 0.0723 ounces silver
1/5 BOLIVIANO, 1864 to 1866, 23 mm diameter, 0.145 ounces silver
1 BOLIVIANO, 1864 to 1893, 35 mm diameter, 0.723 ounces silver

It is almost impossible to find these coins in uncirculated condition. The one in our picture is well preserved, but has, at one time in the distant past, been harshly cleaned. It is a $50 US dollar coin.

If you can find a nice specimen without problems such as cleanings, spots, stains, scratches, and the like, you are doing well. It would be a good idea to get a coin catalog to look up your specific coin. There are several subtle variations listed in the catalogs and not shown in our simplified CoinQuest forum. For the 1 boliviano coins, BV stands for Base Value, or the intrinsic value due to silver content. To find BV, multiply the current price of silver by 0.723. For instance, if silver is trading at $15 US dollars per troy ounce, BV = 0.723 x 15 = $10.80.
