The old German State of Hesse Darmstadt minted 2 and 5 mark coins in silver under King Ernst Ludwig (1892 to 1918). These are big, bold silver coins:
2 (ZWEI) MARK: 0.3215 troy ounces silver
5 (FUNF) MARK: 0.8037 ounces silver
There are also 10 and 20 mark coins in gold. This page covers the silver coins.
These coins from Hesse Darmstadt are not quite as common as other later-date German States coins, and they carry somewhat more value. The coin in our picture (upper left) comes from Fritz Rudolph Kunker in Osnabruck, Germany where it sold for $400 US dollars during a 2017 auction.
Typical catalog values run like this:
TWO MARKS
worn: $250 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $700
well preserved: $1300
fully uncirculated: $3000
FIVE MARKS
worn: $150 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $300
well preserved: $1500
fully uncirculated: $3000
These are catalog values. Refer to our Terminology page for an explanation of how catalog values work.
