Medieval Netherlands (Utrecht) Copper Jeton 1598

Token Medieval Netherlands (Utrecht) Copper Jeton 1598

This is a token, not a coin, a 'jeton' to be more precise. Jetons were used for counting, gaming, and any number of purposes. This one, apparently, was produced for political impact.

The Count of Valkenstein was assassinated by the Spanish Admiral Francisco de Mendoza. If you look closely, you can see the Count's head on Mendoza's sword.

Even though these jetons date back (I believe) to the affixed date, they are fairly common. Jetons do not enjoy a large collector base, so the demand is low and so is the price. The nice-looking example in our picture was sold by Jean Elsen et ses Fils for $80 US dollars during a 2007 auction. The value would be more today.

Roughly:

worn: $20 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $50
well preserved: $120
