The Kushanas ruled an empire in Central Asia and northern India. It was founded by descendants of the Yuezhi from the modern Chinese province of Gansu and maintained diplomatic contacts with the Roman Empire, Persia and China.
Gold stater dinar coinage bears images of kings and gods. The nice example in our picture shows King Huvishka (about 140-183AD) on the front and goddess Ardoksho on the back. If you are familiar with the Greek alphabet, you can make out the names giving leeway for ancient spelling.
Several different patterns exist. Our secondary image shows a dinar of Maiores Domus (about 380 to 290AD) There are also silver coins with similar characteristics. This page applies only to gold coins with weights in the neighborhood of 7.5 to 8.0 grams.
As with most ancient coins, establishing exact values is just about impossible. Each coin stands on its own merits. The coin in our primary picture (upper left) sold for $1100 US dollars and the coin in our secondary picture (lower left) sold for $340. Eye appeal is a primary factor in determining value.
Very roughly:
heavily worn coins with low eye appeal: $200 US dollars approximate catalog value
lightly worn coins with high eye appeal: $1500
The $1100 coin in our primary photo comes from Stephen Album Rare Coins. We are grateful to Stephen for releasing copyright to CoinQuest.
