John sent us a picture of his old thaler (pronounced like 'dollar' but with a 't') from Hungary. Charles VI (CAR VI) was king of Austria at the time, and Hungary was under Austrian control.
As to value, there is good news and bad news about John's coin. The good news is that catalog values run like this:
worn: $50 US dollars approximate catalog value
average circulated: $150
well preserved: $500
fully uncirculated: $1000
All coins in this series, that is, all dates, carry the same catalog values.
Use our Important Terminology page to understand what 'catalog value' means.
Now for the bad news. Obviously John's coin has been damaged. Some kind of abrasive crushing is evident from 9:00 o'clock to 12:00 o'clock on the side with King Charles. The catalog values quote above apply only to undamaged coins.
Even though there is very little wear on the coin, the damage will make it much less valuable -- to the point where it is worth about the same as a heavily worn coin. Add to that a normal dealer's margin of 100%, John could probably sell his coin for $25 or so.
Whew! That's quite a hit: from $300 down to $25. It shows the importance of having undamaged collectible coins.
