Token Mexico Chihuahua Uruachic 1873

Hi Corey -- This must be some type of trade token from Uruachic, a village in the old Mexican State of Chihuahua. Since it is not a coin, it does not command a large collector following, so prices are not high. A guess at value for a the piece that looks like the one in our picture is $25 US dollars. I could be off by a factor of 5 either way: $5 or $125; more likely toward the high side because the token is very interesting. The trick when selling such a token is finding collectors who have special interests in these specific pieces.

These tokens were apparently made in two denominations, 12 1/2 and 25 centavos. They were struck in brass at the Alamos mint for the brothers N. and E. Rascón who ran the mining business 'Compañía Minera Uruachic' in the 1870s. The tokens were redeemable for goods at the company store.

Some tokens seem to have a countermark of a five-petal leaf. This may have been used to denote that a token had been spent, or perhaps out of date.
