US World War I Victory 1918 to 1922

Medal US World War I Victory 1918 to 1922

Leslie sent us this picture of an interesting copper coin or medal. A knowledgable Veteran, Mr. Raymond Tripp, sent this explanation to CoinQuest.

'Dear Sirs, The example submitted by Leslie was originally a WWI Victory Medal that was awarded to US service members at the conclusion of the first World War. If you look at the very top of the image provided [12 O'clock], you can see a small area of discoloration where it appears that the jump ring for attaching the ribbon was removed or broken off. The medal's condition is extremely defaced, with the lettering on the reverse having been removed, and there appears to be a crude attampt to punch in eyes and mouth on the 'Nike's' head. As such, Leslie's medal is not worth very much. These medals can still be purchased through military surplus and brand new from medal manufacturers for about $40.00. An original issue, with presentation box and award certificate, would, of course, add much more to the value.'

CoinQuest heartily thanks Mr. Tripp for his explanation of the medal and, more importantly, for his Service to America in the name of freedom for all.
