These inscriptions and patterns appear on many old French coins, Liz. You probably have a one-half or one ecu silver coin. Louis 16 appears on coins dated 1774 to 1791.
Just about all the coins in this series carry the same catalog values, as follows (use our Important Terminology page to properly interpret these values):
1 ECU (approx 42 mm diameter)
worn: $30 US dollars
average circulated (like our picture): $100
well preserved: $400
1/2 ECU (approx 34 mm diameter)
worn: $25 US dollars
average circulated (like our picture): $80
well preserved: $300
The mint mark appears on the back of the coin under the wreath. Mint mark A is most common. It designates the Paris mint. Other mint marks can cause increases in catalog value, as follows:
1 ecu mint marks AA, B, BB, H, MA, N, and T increase value in grades better than average circulated by about 50 percent.
1/2 ecu mint marks AA, BB, H, I, L, MA, N, Q, R, T, and & (ampersand) increase value in grades better than average circulated by about 50 percent.
Other mint marks are about the same as the A mint mark.
