Canadian cents started out quite large, about 25 mm in diameter, in 1858. In 1920, small cents took over, about 19 mm diameter.
Just about all Canadian small cents from 1920 to 1936 are worth very little in worn condition. A collector will pay reasonable amounts for a nice specimen to add to his or her collection. Except for the special dates noted below, here are some typical catalog values:
worn: less than $1 US dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: less than $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $20
There are a few exceptions to these general values. If you have one of the dates below, your coin is worth more than usual, as follows:
1922: $20 catalog value in average circulated condition
1923 and 1925: $35
1924: $10
1926: $8
1930: $5
The values above are catalog values for coins in average circulated condition. Actual value will be lower. See our Important Terminology page for an explanation of the difference between catalog value and actual value.
