The 3 lion design appears on most modern Indian coins. Although very pretty with plenty of eye appeal, just about all modern Indian coinage is worth very little. This is true for the 1 pice piece as well as anna, rupee, and paisa denominations.
Catalog values:
ONE PICE COMMON DATES (all dates and mint marks except those called out below):
worn: less than $1 US Dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $1
well preserved: $2
fully uncirculated: $4
The coin in our picture is a common date, but it has a pleasing red color, so a collector might be willing to pay as much as $8 to add it to his or her collection.
It is important to find the mint mark on these coins. The mint marks are very tiny (you will probably need a magnifier) and they appear directly under the date on the horse side. There are three mints: Calcutta, Bombay, and Hyderabad. Here are catalog values for the *better* coins:
ONE PICE 1953 HYDERABAD
worn: $100 US Dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $200
well preserved: $400
fully uncirculated: $600
ONE PICE 1954 AND 1955 HYDERABAD
worn: $10 US Dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $20
well preserved: $40
fully uncirculated: $80
ONE PICE 1955 BOMBAY
worn: $2 US Dollar approximate catalog value
average circulated: $4
well preserved: $10
fully uncirculated: $20
Be sure to read the 'Important Terminology' page to understand what the term catalog value means.
