Portugal minted copper coins in 3, 5, 10, and 20 reis denominations from 1840 to 1892. After 1882 these coins bore a likeness of Luiz I, but before that time only an ornate shield appeared on the front side of the coin. Here is a summary of catalog value for the shielded coins:

Any coin with damage that heavily impairs its eye-appeal will be worth zero. This includes coins with holes, severe scratches, corrosion etc.
