Jamaica Farthing, Penny, and 1/2 Penny 1869 to 1963

Jamaica Farthing, Penny, and 1/2 Penny 1869 to 1963

A farthing is one-quarter of a penny. It is the smallest denomination in the old British monetary system. Farthings, half pennies, and pennies were minted for Jamaica for quite a long period -- from 1880 to 1952. They changed the King or Queen, of course, as with all British coins, and sometimes the details of the shield on the back changed slightly. The composition changed from copper-nickel to nickel-brass in 1937.

As to value, the older the coin, the more value it carries. The Queen Victoria coins are the oldest. Here are typical catalog values which apply to all dates in the series:

As with most CoinQuest appraisals, the numbers shown are catalog values for regular coins, not proof coins. (Proofs are special coins minted solely for collectors.) If you can find a proof coin, these can be quite valuable, exceeding $100. Use our Terminology page to convert inflated catalog values to actual values.
